Postcards from the Edge

In 2010 Catrin Osborne completed an MA in Performance Design and Practice at Central St Martins College of Art and Design. Her final show, in July 2010, was based on the book Postcards From The Edge by Carrie Fisher. Initially the audience received letters from the main protagonist – Suzanne Vale – which were apparently sent by her while she was in rehab, struggling with addiction. During the show Suzanne spent the entire time attached to the wall (representing her bed in rehab), where her mother came to visit her, and various other actions (e.g. movement, aerial hoop and video projections) played out below her. At the end of the performance, the audience all received a copy of a letter from Suzanne addressed to a “Dr Blau”, who had pumped out her stomach after she had taken the overdose which precipitated the events of the story.
